How to deal with Rejection

By Claudia Dean

It’s important to celebrate rejection as it’s what steers us onto the path that is waiting for us! Often people associate rejection with a negative experience however, I believe it’s an opportunity to re align your life & use it to drive you in the right direction.

Coping with rejection can be very challenging, but we need to realise that rejection is our driving force & blessing in disguise. The key is, you can’t take rejection personally- even if it is tough & disheartening. You need to remind yourself that it will steer you into the right path & present you with new opportunities you hadn’t even thought of yet. It is important to remember that everything happens for a reason and what is meant to be, will be the right path for you.

I have lived through a career in classical ballet with one of the world’s top companies and I’ve definitely experienced my fair share of rejection with casting, exam marks, opportunities & more. However, over time I noticed that no matter how hard the rejection was to experience, it always benefited me for the better in the end. I would come away stronger, more resilient & new doors would open- always have belief that the universe has your back.

Imagine if we were handed & got every single opportunity we set out to achieve? We’d never learn the amazing skill of resilience & determination. Losing & experiencing rejection gives us those quantities & they are so valuable to have for everyday life. When we DO win & get opportunities we experience an amazing buzz of excitement- this would be lost if we constantly were to win, win, win. We need the challenge of rejection occasionally to make us appreciate our wins.

In dance, it really comes down to who can persevere the hardest and longest. Those who hold on to their dreams tight and don’t let rejection deflect them from their goals. There is a school, company & opportunity suitable for every single dancer out there, and you will find that place too. Never lose hope or faith, because your hard work will lead you to where you are meant to be. If you put in 120% hard work, you’re going to get back 120% worth of results!

I strongly believe that you either succeed, or you learn. You may be rejected on one, two or countless occasions. No matter how many times you get turned away, always find the blessing in that experience- even if it’s impossible to find. You might find that blessing 2 months, 2 years or 20 years down the track- but you will eventually find it & know why your path shifted the way it did.

Keep persevering, hold your head high and eventually your turn will come. Discipline, hardwork and determination is always rewarded, and remember that what is meant to be, will be. Life has an incredible way of steering us onto the path that is meant for us. No matter how unclear the reason may be at the time, trust the process, and know that rejection is a massive part of your journey and will only make you stronger and more resilient! Life happens for you, not to you.

I like to remind myself:  “The harder I work, the luckier I get”
